While modern sutureless cataract surgery is safe and offers rapid visual recovery, the micro-incision in your cornea takes time to heal completely. Adhering to post-operative precautions during the first few weeks is crucial to prevent infections and ensure optimal visual outcomes.
To help you protect your eyes, here is a list of things you must avoid immediately after cataract surgery.
1. Rubbing or Pressing the Operated Eye
This is the most important precaution. Rubbing or applying direct pressure to your eye can disrupt the self-healing micro-incision and displace the newly implanted artificial lens (IOL). We recommend wearing the clear plastic shield provided by the clinic while sleeping to prevent accidental rubbing.
2. Splashing Water Directly into Your Eye
For the first 10 to 15 days, avoid splashing tap water directly into your face or eye. Tap water can carry bacteria that can enter the healing incision, leading to serious infections. When bathing, wash below the neck and use a clean, damp cloth to gently wipe your face.
3. Intense Physical Strain & Heavy Lifting
Avoid intense exercise, bending fully down from the waist, or lifting heavy objects (above 5–10 kg) for the first two weeks. These activities raise the pressure inside your head and eye, which can put strain on the healing incision.
4. Swimming and Hot Tubs
Chlorinated pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans are breeding grounds for bacteria. Refrain from swimming or using saunas and steam rooms for at least 3 to 4 weeks after surgery, or until your surgeon gives you clearance during a follow-up visit.
5. Wearing Eye Makeup
Avoid applying eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, or face creams near the operated eye for the first two weeks. Applying and removing makeup can introduce bacteria and put physical pressure on the healing ocular surface.
Resume Activities Gradually
Most daily activities, such as reading, watching TV, and light walks, can be resumed safely within 24 to 48 hours. By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure a safe and smooth recovery.
